the silence of the sirens/ Das Schweigen der Sirenen

The Sirens were mythical female deities linked to water, love, and death. In Homer's tale, the Sirens lured mortals with their enchanting songs to attack and devour them. Odysseus, in Homer's *Odyssey, seeks to hear their song without falling under its spell, so he orders himself to be tied to the ship's mast. In contrast, Kafka's version of Odysseus devises a different strategy, engaging in an apparently uneven battle to outsmart and overcome the Sirens' seduction. Kafka has Odysseus plug his ears with wax and chains himself in an effort to avoid hearing the Sirens' seductive song. However, the Sirens remain silent, only grimacing. Odysseus believes they are singing and thinks he has outwitted them, but the Sirens also believe they have triumphed over the cunning mortal. Neither side lost: Odysseus believed the Sirens were singing, while the Sirens thought they had deceived him. However, later on, Kafka's Odysseus must have turned his head to gaze at the rocks being silently battered and the demons with their female heads and bird-like bodies, thinking, "No matter what you've done, I have escaped you!" Artists from Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Greece focus on reinterpreting the myth, where the Sirens are no longer the deceivers but the ones being deceived. In the exhibition, they will interpret the myth and transform it into a visual representation within a new modular narrative.
