Was hängen bleibt is the first juxtaposition between the German-Austrian conceptual artist Marco Spitzar and his former professor, the Austrian painter and sculptor Bruno Gironcoli. The title refers to the importance of materiality in both artists' work and to the lasting impact of artistic influences.
While Gironcoli imitates the aesthetics of consumer goods and reflects material hierarchies by using metallic effect pigments in numerous drawings and early polyester objects, the glue in Marco Spitzar's work acts as a conservator of time and memory. As the primary material of his works, it is applied in a painterly style to form a second surface on drawings and to cover objects. The air bubbles trapped in the glue materialize the past and disrupte the linearity of time. Drawing from an in-depth exploration of materiality and the relationship between surface, object, and space, the exhibition reveals the close connection between the works of Gironcoli and Spitzar, showcasing the poetic material language of both artists.

Marco Spitzar (b. 1964 in Osnabrück, Deutschland) is a German-Austrian conceptual artist. His multimedia work, ranging from drawings and object art to performative sculptures, is permeated by his singular use of glue. Based on the idea that "We are all born glued," Spitzar explores the materialization of time by transforming objects and bodies into symbolically charged artifacts. The glue functions as both a connecting material and a metaphysical agent: it preserves traces, covers surfaces with meaning, and addresses central questions of memory, identity, transience, and loss. Spitzar studied sculpture in Bruno Gironcoli's master class at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Sophie Wratzfeld (b. 1996 in Vienna) is an independent curator with a focus on modern and contemporary art and the support of emerging artists. Her curatorial practice operates at the intersection of fine art, psychology and sociology. Her extensive experience working with leading international artists, collectors, and art institutions includes Hauser&Wirth, Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), Seoul; Palazzo Strozzi, Florence; Photo London; Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, and mumok - Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien. She studied Art History at the University of Vienna and “Fine and Decorative Art & Design” at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London.
